Xbox 360

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 at some point is going to have HD DVD in it. Some future version will have the HD DVD drive for movie playback, not for games, but only for movies. They can’t have games on HD DVD dics becasue then older Xbox 360 won’t be able to play those games.

“The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today’s DVD format,” said Gates. “We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.”

This move will allow Microsoft to continue to release newer version
of the Xbox 360 to keep its hardware competitive. However, this creates
several problems. First, hardware cannot be significantly changed, nor
can game developer take advantage of hardware changes. If either
happens then previous version of Xboxes won’t be able to play the newer
games.

Second this move will alienate the first movers in the market.
Microsoft wants to build a large user base before the Sony PS3 is
released. By saying that they are going to release new Xbox 360s with
HD-DVD, at some future point, Microsoft will loose some customers that will wait for the HD-DVD support.
