Google Sync for iPhone

Sweet, Google Mobile Sync now supports the iPhone! This means I can get Google to push my contacts and calendar to my iPhone. Next step is getting my email (mainly gmail account) pushed to my phone also. Almost there I hope!

iPhone Update

I bought the 3G iPhone a couple of weeks ago when I was released, and I thought I’d post a quick update about it. I’m loving it so far, it is great. The applications are awesome, and what’s more I’ve managed to jailbreak it. So I have access to both the Apple App Store and Cydia. =)

Great Weekend

This was a great weekend, unfortunately not a lot of sleep but lots of fun. Friday evening after work, my co-workers and I did a little bit of yoga. This was the first time I have ever done yoga, and the exercises destroyed me by the end of the hour and half. I was dead tired by the end of it; despite the tiring nature of it, it was a great deal of fun.

Afterward, I joined up with some other friends for Friday night happy hour and to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We were out celebrating till like 1 am. I managed to get on a 1:50 train out to Long Island that was supposed to get me home by 2:46. Unfortunately, the LIRR never runs on time. My train waited at Jamica for over 20 minutes, and then we waited for another 20 minutes at another station. All for absolutely no reason at all. In the end, I got home at almost 3:30.

After sleeping at most four hours, I got up at 7:45, drove over to the AT&T store and stood in line to buy a new iPhone. I thought the store would open at 8, but they actually opened at 10. So, with only four hours of sleep, I was sitting/sleeping outside the AT&T store for 2 hours. I was like the 20th in line this morning, so I wasn’t even the first one into the store. I didn’t get into the store for another 30 minutes after they opened up.

In the end, I got a new 8 gig iPhone 3G. It is wonderful; and I’m glad I waited for it. The applications are awesome. I’m waiting for a WordPress app so I can post from the phone itself.

Hopefully within the next couple of days I’ll have time to write a complete review on the phone with my thoughts all.

After I posted yesterday the question that I had around the new iPhone, I email AT&T to see if what they would say about it. Here’s the response that I got regarding the pricing and the discounts:

$199 8GB and $299 16GB for new activations and qualified upgrades with 2
year agreement
Company Fan discounts for both voice and data plans will apply to 3G
iPhone.
Company Fan discounts are not available on device purchase for 2G or 3G
iPhones
Consumer Data Plan (must be added to qualified Voice plan):
$30 – Unlimited Data (Email/Web), includes Visual Voicemail (No SMS included!)

Questions about the 3G iPhone

Apple announced a 3G iPhone today during the WWDC. However, after the announcement, there are still some unknowns left:

The Apple Store page on the iPhone lists the GPS as Assisted GPS. Does this mean there is no actual GPS chip in the phone, and the GPS is based on cell-triangulation?
Can it be unlocked using winPwn or something similar?
Is AT&T going to charge more per month for 3G access?
Is AT&T going to allow corporate discounts (FAN) to apply to monthly iPhone bills?

Hopefully Apple and AT&T release more information about the new phone soon.

Blackberry Thunder

Research in Motion (RIM) recently announced the Blackberry “Thunder;” a touchscreen equipped Blackberry. I don’t see this being anything more than a niche device targeted towards professionally Blackberry users that want the touchscreen aspect of the iPhone. It will appeal to the Blackberry user that wants to get the iPhone, but can’t due to limitation from their IT department at work. For example, my firm’s IT department only supports push email for Blackberrys. Even though my current cell phone can understand the protocol and everything to get emails pushed to it, I can’t set it up at work. I can only have push email on a Blackberry. So, if I wanted the touchscreen of an iPhone, on a Blackberry I would get this Thunder.

In all, it makes sense for RIM to release a phone which combines Blackberrys and iPhones; there is a market for such a phone. But I don’t think the market is very large. It appears to be a niche market. Either way, it will definitely be interesting to see how it does against the iPhone.

Stimulus Money

So, I’m supposed to be getting a $600 direct deposit from the government as a part of the economic stimulus package. We’re supposed to get it tomorrow, so hopefully my bank account gets a nice bump at midnight. My basic plan is to buy the new 3G iPhone, when it gets released that is. But hopefully, I’ll be able to raise money through other ventures so I don’t need to spend the whole $600 on the iPhone. Basically, I’m eligible to upgrade my cell phone in July with AT&T. So, I’m going to upgrade my phone, renew my contract for 2 more years. Once I get the new phone, I’ll unlock it, and then sell it on eBay (or Craigslist or something else). This should give me a good amount of money, and I have some money for other eBay sales. So, all in all, I should hopefully, only need to spend a couple of hundred on the iPhone. The beauty of it, I have a 20% discount with AT&T, and if I can hack the iPhone, I should be able to keep that discount. Hopefully it will all work out.
