Review: Superman Returns

Wow… I watched Superman Returns the other day, and it was a huge disappointment. Based on the trailers, and the hype around the movie, I was expecting something awesome, but nothing. There were so many problems with it; I don’t even know where to start. First off, the acting was decent. I was impressed by how similar Routh was to Reeves. The two of them looked very similar, which was good. Next, Spacey as Lex Luther was excellent. Finally, one last saving grace; Harold from Harold and Kumar was one of Lex’s henchmen, and it was hilarious to see him act a serious part. I kept waiting for him to say something stupid and funny.

But, that is where it all ended. The story was bearable, nothing really exciting. I mean Lex’s plot was crazy and ingenious, but basically was the same thing as in Superman 1. He wanted the best land, and wanted to make money off that. There should have been a better evil plot by Lex. I mean he has had 5 years to come up with something, and this is the best he can do?

Next, what’s with that kid? Going to comics I don’t think Superman is supposed to have a kid with Lois at any point… But that aside, if we go on the idea that Lois and Superman had the kid at the end of Superman 2, Lois is not supposed to remember the events of that movie…. Superman kissed her at the end, and she forgot everything that happened. So, how does she know that the kid is his?

I think the movie would have been a lot better if they had used the whole “Death and Life of Superman.” Basically, this is the storyline where Superman fights Doomsday, dies, and then there a whole bunch of other Supermen. With this story line, you have everything. Not only do you get action with Superman fighting Doomsday, and as an added bonus you get the Justice League fighting Doomsday as well, but you also get the whole relationship side of it. I think it would have been a much better choice for a movie. Hopefully, at some point they will make it into a movie.
