Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

I finally got around to watching the first Pirates movie, and it was excellent. A lot of people had built up my expectations for the movie, and it lived up to them. The story basically revolves around a crew of pirates that are trying to rid themselves of a curse.

While there are not a whole lot of action scenes, the action is well placed through out the movie and the fights are choreographed beautifully. Nicely inter-spaced with the action is a blend of humor and drama. The humor works great in the movie; its not slapstick, nor is it overly dense. It manages to create a good balance between to the two for an action movie. Finally, perhaps one the of best aspects of the movie are the visual effects. While there is nothing spectacular, the effects are very good when you keep in mind that the movie was made three years ago. I particularly liked the effect of the pirates changing from humans to skeletons in the last fight sequence; very well done.

Overall, this is a great movie, and you should see it if you haven’t already. 8 out of 10. Up next is hopefully the next Pirates movie, if I get time to watch it this weekend, that is.
