According to the vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Phil Harrison, the Playstation 3 will ship with only one skew. Microsoft, on the other hand, announced on August 17th, a multiple skew release plan. Harrison stated that multiple skews, “just confuses the audience. They don’t know which one to buy, developers don’t know which one to create for, and retailers don’t know which one to stock… So I think we wouldn’t take that strategy. We wouldn’t create confusion.†Harrison also said that this was his personal view, and not the official word from Sony, stating that it was too early to tell what they would do at launch.
If the Playstation and Playstation 2 launches are any indication, the Playstation 3 launch package will consist of the console, and one controller. Sony has typically offered a range of other accessories for customers to buy, at an added cost. This strategy makes sense for Sony because it allows them to generate the most profit.
