Rockstar’s best selling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PC
has recently been under intense scrutiny about the “hot coffee”
modification. Allegedly when loaded, this mod allows gamers to engage
in explicit sexual acts. According to the creator of the mod, it simply
unlocks content not normally accessible during game play, and that it
doesn’t modify the underlying code. However, in a recent statement,
Rockstar stated the mod is a result of changes to the underlying source
code. Rockstar stated that, “hackers created the ‘hot coffee’
modification by disassembling and then combining, recompiling and
altering the game’s source code … the ‘hot coffee’ scenes cannot be
created without intentional and significant technical modifications and
reverse engineering of the game’s source code.” As result, Rockstar
feels that they shouldn’t be held liable for the content, nor should
the game rating be changed to AO, Adults Only.
If the source code did not originally contain these scenes, then
Rockstar would nor face any consequences as a result. If on the other
hand, the scenes were within the original game disc, Rockstar could
face problems. The Electronic Software Rating Board, ESRB, might change
the game rating from M, Mature, to AO, Adults Only. If the game rating
is changed, then many retailers will not be able to carry the game,
directly impacting Rockstar’s sales. At this point, the outcome is
still unclear.
