Commuting…

So, I’m working in the city, but to save money, I’m commuting from Long Island. Each day, I take the Long Island Rail Road from Hicksville to Penn Station, and then take a subway to 42nd street, finally reaching my building on 44th. Each day, this trip takes a total of 1.5 hours each way, door to door time. As I was coming back home the other day, I got to thinking, how much am I really spending commuting?

It takes me 1.5 hours each way; that is 3 hours in one day. During a five day work week, that becomes 15 hours during the week (3 x 5). During the course of an year, there are 52 weeks, but I’ve got vacation time of 14 days, so lets reduce the 52 weeks by 3 weeks, leaving us 49 weeks of work during a year. 49 weeks times 15 hours a week, is 735 hours. In the course of a year, I’ll spend 735 hours commuting!

Even if I’m in the city, I’ll still have a commute, but it will be no where near the same amount as it currently is; I hope. As a result, I’m looking for places to move into, hopefully, if the housing market continues as it is currently, I’ll be able to afford a condo that I can buy.

As a side note, 20 days left :-) .
